Coaches Corner - Coaching Tips

Chiropractic Sports Institute is proud to showcase the following coaches who give advice and work with the C.S.I. Staff.

Joe Buttitta - C.S.I.'s Golf Pro

Joe Buttitta has been active in Southern California sports and media for more than 25 years, and is a man who wears a variety of hats in his many community-based activities. The latest hat he is wearing these days is that of a PGA Professional golfer. He teaches NATURAL GOLF and conventional golf at Westlake Golf Course in Westlake Village.

Buttitta also has experience in radio, television, newspapers and magazines. After nearly a decade as sports director at KGIL-Radio in the San Fernando Valley, he entered television as the director of sports at KTLA, Channel 5, in Los Angeles, where he was the nightly sports anchor and called the play-by-play for the California Angels major league baseball team, as well as UCLA football and basketball.

While at KTLA he won an Emmy and a Golden Mike for his work, along with awards from the Associated Press and United Press International. He has also reported sports on channels 9, 11 and 13 in the Los Angeles market. While at Channel 11 he covered the Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Buttitta, a Notre Dame High School/Cal State Northridge graduate, is currently a PGA Teaching Professional at Westlake Golf Course. He has been a Class-A member of the PGA for eight years and has written golf for Executive Golfer Magazine, Golf World Magazine, Natural Golfer Magazine and is currently a featured instructor on Golf.com. For 23 years his by-line appeared in the L.A. Daily News as its golf columnist. During the summer of 1995 he served as the host of “Talkin’ Golf”, a live call-in show on XTRA-Sports 690, an all-sports radio station in Southern California. The show was produced by the Southern California PGA.

"Teaching Natural Golf has revitalized my teaching career," says Buttitta, who has been teaching the Moe Norman-inspired swing for eight years. He estimates that 90-95 percent of his students are Natural Golfers. "The Natural Golf method is easier to explain and understand, therefore easier to teach to everyday players who just love to play this game. It’s the most logical way to approach hitting a golf ball off the ground. Teaching is fun again!!"

Joe currently makes his home in Simi Valley with his wife, Teri, and young son, Joey. Two older children, Deborah and Anthony, are out in the world working on careers in family counseling and as a television news cameraman, respectively.

Joe Buttitta is a Class-A PGA Professional at Westlake Golf Course.

Shannon & Rob Yontz

Co-owners and operators of True North Fitness & Health Training Studio in Ventura; Ventura County Adventure Boot Camp– an outdoor fitness program for women with locations in Thousand Oaks & Ventura; and Stretch-n-Grow of Ventura County a youth fitness program.

Rob Yontz
Sports and fitness have always been an integral part of Rob’s life. Both parents were collegiate level athletes and graduated with Physical Education degrees. He has been a team and individual athlete since the second grade. His activities have ranged from playing and lettering in football, baseball, wrestling, and track & field; to water and snow skiing, racquetball, running, and weight training. Rob is a Virginia Tech alumni and a U.S. Navy veteran who had a distinguished career in Reliability Engineering before partnering with Shannon to build the vision of True North Pioneering, Inc.

Rob knows that it’s the ability to get up when you are down and keep driving for your goals that defines a true champion. He believes that everyone has a champion in them - some people just need little help to call that inner drive or to listen to it. He finds it amazing how simple it is to get the body fit and yet so many struggle to do it. The science is quite straightforward. It’s SIMPLE, but simple does not equate to EASY. The lifestyle change necessary can be challenging so many people choose to sell out their long term health and quality of life for near term convenience.

A lot of our clients ask where he gets his passion. Rob will tell you that it comes from many places. He absolutely loves the physics and mechanics behind fitness coaching and the biochemistry behind nutrition. But, what he loves most is seeing someone "get it", and then "make it", and be profoundly changed (in thought pattern and quality of life) forever.

Being active is a great gift, and he wants to help each and every person to optimize their ability to move, and enjoy life on their own terms, the way they want to, and do it pain free - that truly is leaving a worthy legacy!

Shannon Yontz
Shannon graduated from the University of San Diego where she majored in International Relations and French minor in French. After college she joined the hospitality industry and started her career with Hyatt Hotels in Westlake Village. She completed her career as the Director of Catering & Convention Services for the Island of Lana'i overseeing the two sister hotels - Manele Bay & Lodge at Koele. Upon returning from extensive travels throughout Europe, she then landed back in her hometown of Newbury Park to help her mother and father with the family business until her mother passed in late 2002.

When Shannon was in her late 20’s she finally overcame her own personal long time struggle with weight concerns. Shannon became very passionate about learning and practicing good fitness and nutrition and wants to inspire those around her to improve their health. She has maintained her weight loss for over 15 years and knows that if she can do it - anyone can! She knows that there are no quick fixes to fat elimination and good health; it takes patience and consistency time and time again to make lifestyle changes. She has made it her professional and lifetime mission to educate and coach others in their weight loss and physical conditioning goals.

It was in 2003 that Rob and Shannon purchased Stretch-n-Grow franchise and their fitness career began. Stretch-n-Grow is the world's largest children's fitness program, the mission of SNG is to ensure that children get an early start in establishing fitness and wellness habits as a foundation for healthy lifestyles for the rest of their lives. Since beginning True North Fitness in 2003 they have continued to add more services to enhance and grow their fitness business.

Shannon loves the outdoors; her biggest accomplishment was completing the 1999 LA Marathon. Her other passions include cycling; both indoors on her spin bike and out along our beautiful Ventura coastline. She has entered and enjoyed numerous 5k's, 10k's, duathalons (bike & run), and multiple charity events for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Early mornings she can be found coaching TNFH's outdoor fitness program - Ventura County Adventure BootCamp. Mid-mornings she can be found coaching Stretch-n-Grow youth fitness classes. Shannon looks forward to working and living in Ventura County for a long time to come.

They jointly or individually hold certifications as: Certified Personal Trainer, Advanced Personal Trainer, Certified Adventure Fitness Trainer/BootCamp Instructor, IMPACT Instructor, Fitness Nutritionist, Yoga Instructor, Biomechanics Specialist, Functional Training Specialist, Fitness Assessment Specialist, Senior Fitness Instructor, Youth Fitness Instructor, Youth Nutrition Specialist, and in Pediatric and Adult CPR & First Aid.
